Captured at Frederick, Maryland on September 12, 1862. He was released on exchange from Fort Delaware on October 2, 1862 and arrived at Aiken’s Landing on November 10, 1862. He was hospitalized in Richmond in May of 1863 and then to Petersburg after that. At the end he was captured again, at the Battle of High Bridge. His Oath of allegiance was sworn at Point Lookout Maryland (prison) on June 23, 1865.
