Joseph joined the Union Army 03Aug1862 at Lyons, Wayne Co., N.Y., enlisting into the 111th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry Co. D and almost immediately saw action against 'Stonewall' Jackson at Harpers Ferry, he was also at Gettysburg's Cemetery Ridge and 'Pickett's Charge'.And present at Manassas, the Wilderness campaign, Spottsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and was present for the surrender of Lee at Appomattax Court House. On 23May1865 he was present for the 'Grand Review' of the Army in Washington D.C. and was mustered out a few days later on 03June1865
