Actress. She is best remembered for her portrayal of the staunch Ruth Bridgers in the cult classic "The House on Haunted Hill" (1959). She was the oldest of four children, the daughter of a railyard laborer and a linotype operator. After working as a professional singer who performed in several major nightclubs, she was introduced to director Will Jason following a noteworthy performance at the prestigious Ciro's nightclub. Impressed by her blonde good looks, hourglass figure, and velvet voice, he arranged for her to begin a career in the film industry, beginning with her appearing under his supervision in a supporting role in "Sarge Goes to College" (1947). From there, she would go on to enjoy a successful career as a character actress, appearing in such feature films as "Killer Dill" (1947), "The High and The Mighty" (1954), "Edge of Hell" (1956), "The Ten Commandments" (1956), and "Hit and Run" (1957). In addition, she also had a notable role on the syndicated sitcom "The Lone Wolf." She also appeared in such stage productions as "Dinner at Eight," "Blithe Spirit," "The Philadelphia Story," "A Murder is Announced," "Jane Eyre," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "The Glass Menagerie," "Private Lives," "Macbeth," "Street Scene," "Watch on the Rhine," "East of Eden," "Of Mice and Men," "The Importance of Being Ernest," "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs," "The Children's Hour," "Hedda Gabler," "Our Town," and "The Little Foxes." During her career, she was a member of the Actors Studio, and the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, had been a member of the Hollywood Republican Committee, was an adherent of the Bahá'í faith, had been a professional entertainer for the USO, was a commercial model for the Ford Agency, had her own syndicated show on KLAC-TV, had been a celebrity spokeswoman for Maxwell House Coffee and BIC Ballpoint Pens, had been a theatrical instructor for the Pasadena Playhouse, was the older sister of character actors John Mitchum and Robert Mitchum, sat on the board of directors for the California division of the Homemakers of America, sat on her local charters of the United Way and the Boys and Girl Scouts of America, and she was married to businessman Elliot Sater from 1960 to 1986 (their union ended upon his death and produced no children). Following her withdrawal from acting in 1959, she spent the remainder of her life dividing time between her homes in California and Arizona, having made wise investments in oil and real estate and was later a familiar face at autograph conventions until her death from the complications of Alzheimer's Disease.
