William Colgan entered the service on August 1, 1777. He signed up for three years of service as a private. His assignment was to Captain Cadwalder W. Jones Light Dragoon Company near to Martinsburg, Berkley County, Virginia. The Light Dragoon Company was attached to the 3rd Regiment of Light Dragoons under the command of Colonel George Baylor
and was commonly called "General Washington's Life Guard."
