He was the youngest of nine children born to Joseph and Ann (Douglas) Timberlake. His father served throughout the Revolutionary War, having enlisted in 1776 in the 7th Virginia Regiment and serving in the Commander-in-Chief's guard until 1783.

Robert's mother died when he was age 10, and he supported himself from that time forward. In 1833, he removed to Sangamon Co., IL, where he superintended a large farm owned by Richard Barrett. It was there that he met and married Jemima Ann Simms in November 1834.

In 1837, the family removed to northwest Illinois, accompanied by a large contingent of relatives. Robert took up 240 acres in Oxford Township, Henry County, and was among the first settlers in the county. He later added additional land to his holdings, eventually owning over 900 acres.

Robert and Jemima had nine children.
