A 16-year-old Lakeville girl passed away Wednesday morning after losing control of her car on a slushy road and colliding with an oncoming SUV.

Alyssa Lynn Ettl was a junior at Lakeville North High School, where she was apparently headed at the time of the crash.

Ettl was a member of the school's soccer team, which was a state runner-up to Minnetonka in Class AA in October. She also participated in a business and marketing club for students, said Linda Swanson, district spokeswoman.

"She was very involved ... and a really good student, so (her death) has touched a lot of lives in the building," Swanson said.

On Monday, Ettl was named one of the captains of the school's 2014 soccer team.

"Alyssa was the sweetest, most likable person on the team," said coach Bulut "Turk" Ozturk. Ozturk met with the team Wednesday afternoon.

"She got along with everyone," he said. "When it came to her soccer, she was all about the team. When I needed her to do something, she would step up for her team. She had a lot of heart. She was one of the hardest-working players I've ever been able to coach."

The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. on Dodd Boulevard a quarter-mile north of Lakeville North High School, according to police. The occupants of both vehicles involved were wearing seat belts, police said.

Ettl was headed south on Dodd in a Pontiac Grand Prix when the car "lost control on the slush-covered roadway," slid sideways and was broadsided by a GMC Acadia, a sport utility vehicle, traveling in the opposite direction, police said. A light mist was falling at the time of the crash.

The start of school at Lakeville North was delayed two hours Wednesday morning. The late start had been scheduled and was unrelated to Wednesday's snowfall.

Staff counselors, deans from other schools and local clergy were on site and available for students, Swanson said.

"Students have gathered in several places throughout the building and are involved in activities to help them through their grief," she said. "But this is a tough one."

Dodd Boulevard was closed for several hours during the investigation. Authorities are still investigating the accident.
