Arlie William "Andy" Andrews died at the Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Springdale.

Born in Little Rock, Andrews was a member of Little Rock's Landmark Missionary Baptist Church and a 33rd degree Mason. He graduated from Fuller High School in Little Rock before honorably serving as a y-gunner on the United States Coast Guard Cutter Campbell during World War II. He dropped depth charges when the Campbell encountered a Nazi submarine wolf pack, helping sink five German U-boats before ramming and sinking a sixth within an 18-hour period in February 1943.

After the war, Andrews ran his own wholesale and retail businesses in Little Rock for many years, and successfully sold insurance prior to his retirement. In retirement, he became a well-known and trusted vendor in area flea markets. Andrews loved visiting with everyone and talking about his beloved Arkansas Razorbacks, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves. Known for his quick wit and number calculating ability, Andrews loved playing dominoes and taught his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids how to play, sometimes staying up into the wee hours of the morning doing so.

Andrews extended a smile and a strong handshake to everyone he met. He considered his caretakers at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center to be friends long before they aided him. The wonderful people of Circle of Life Hospice cared for him during his last days. He loved them all like family.

A wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather and friend to all, Andrews will be greatly missed.

Survivors include wife Nadine Winfrey Kretzer Andrews of Springdale and her daughters Cherrie Miller of Springdale, Joyce Thuman of Red Oak, Texas, and Barbara Prenzlau of St. Joseph, Missouri; former wife Vivian Vanness Andrews Hemmert of Inola, Oklahoma, and their four sons, Arlan K. Andrews Sr. Ph.D. of Corpus Christi, Texas, Roy A. Andrews of Corpus Christi, Texas, Aaron W. Andrews of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Rick A. Andrews of Inola, Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
