Lugean Esten died April 28, 2015 in Mesquite, Texas at the age of 102. Graveside funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015, at the College Station Cemetery. Funeral services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.

She was born on August 3, 1912, in Comanche, Texas, one of seven children of William James Ormsby and Addie May (White) Ormsby. She attended Gorman schools, graduated from Gorman High School, and received her teaching certificate at John Tarleton Agricultural College. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sam Houston State Teachers College.

On June 25, 1936, she married Clarence Kenyon (C.K.) Esten in Gorman, and the couple moved to West Medway, Massachusetts, where they lived for ten years. In the summer of 1946, they moved to College Station, where Lugean taught 4th grade at South Knoll Elementary for 24 years. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Bryan, where she taught Kindergarten Sunday School. Her husband died in 1992, and she moved to Garland in 1996.

Lugean was a master quilter and expert at many types of needlework. She made many beautiful quilts, continuing her craft until very late in her life. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading.

Lugean was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Martha Leighton, five brothers and one sister. She is survived by daughter Texanne Golding and husband Fred of Mesquite, grandchildren Lynn Smith and husband Joe of Conroe, Lisa Schulze and husband Mark of Magnolia, Cindy Leighton and husband Mike Smith of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Randy Leighton and wife Meganne of Lenexa, Kansas. She is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
