She grew up during the depression, taking over the care of her siblings as her mother died suddenly when she was only eleven. Marie met the needs of her family preparing meals, doing the wash, sewing and shopping in general filling her mothers shoes while her father worked to provide for the brood. In her youth she enjoyed reading, horseback riding and had a yearning desire to travel. She graduated from P.S. DuPont high school in 1940. After graduation she took a job with the Telephone Company as an operator. She later worked 29 years at Katie's Restaurant, retiring in 1976 due to a heart condition.
Marie loved to "browse" while shopping, she enjoyed going to yard sales, bowling, playing bingo, watching tv among her favorite shows were The Price is Right, Charlie Chan movies, Ironside and Perry Mason. She also loved reading a good mystery novel. Marie had a beautiful display of flowers in her rock garden and was especially fond of the roses and lilac bush. But she enjoyed nothing better than having a nice cup of tea and something sweet with family and friends.
She is buried in Cathedral Cemetery on Lancaster Ave. in Wilmington in the DeLacy / Walsh family plot alongside her father William P. DeLacy & her maternal grandfather Joseph P. Walsh.
She wanted most to be remembered for her funny cakes on holidays. But she will always be remembered as the woman with a heart of gold who always had room for one more and made sure no one ever did without. She rarely ever said "I love you" but those unspoken words spoke volumes in every single thing she did.
