Clara was born Klaaske Bijlsma on 4 Jul 1862 to Paulus Bijlsma and Hittje Sijens in Wesdongeradeel, Friesland, Netherlands. She and her husband Edward born Yde Brandsma were married in Westdongeradeel, Friesland, Netherlands on 17 May 1888. Klaaske and her husband Yde sailed on the ship named Veendam from Rotterdam and arrived in New York on 8 Apr 1891. They had daughter Aafke with them, a baby less than a year old. They would stay for a year or so in Wisconsin before moving to Minnesota.
In the 1900 census they are farming in Dell Grove, Pine County, Minnesota where they had the following children listed:
daughter Aafke (spelled "Affe"), b. Apr 1889 in Holland,
daughter Hattie b. Aug 1892 in Wisconsin,
daughter Annie b. June 1895 in Minnesota, and
daughter Alice b. Aug 1897 in Minnesota and
daughter Katie b. Aug 1897 in Minnesota * note last two are twins.
The 1905 census shows them still in Dell Grove, Pine, MN. Here the family has added son Arthur b. 1902 in MN but there is no older daughter Aafke listed with the family.
The 1910 census finds them back in Wisconsin farming in Scott Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Son Arthur b. 1902 supposedly in Wisconsin but the other children born in MN are also mistakenly listed as born in Wisconsin as well. Again there is no sign of older daughter Aafke.
By the 1920 census the family is in Westford, Dodge County, WI where they are no longer farming. Ed is listed as a "laborer" and only daughter Katie is still living with them as a 21 year old hotel "waitress".
By 1930 she and her husband are living at 165 Germania St. in Randolph, WI. They are both naturalized citizens speaking Dutch. Their occupations are 'none'.
1940 census is similar information except their street address is now 247 Germania St. Randolph, MN.
The family was later joined by her younger brother Wybe Bijlsma (William Belsma) and sister Trintje Bijlsma (Catheran Smits).
