Jim was born in Fairmont, MN to Paul (Slim) & Lillian Adamson on March 14, 1955. He graduated from Trimont High School in 1973, graduated from Jackson, MN Vo-Tech School and worked as an auto mechanic in the Trimont Co-op, and also with his dad at Red's D-X in Trimont. Racing was a passion for Jim and he progressed "through the ranks" until he began the 1976 season in a sprint car ~ #90 ~ at the North Star Speedway in Minneapolis and Fairmont Raceway until his death at the Fairmont Raceway on May 28th, 1976. He had been very anxious to continue racing that year at the Jackson VFW Speedway and the new half-mile Hartford, SD Speedway which opened in July of 1976.
Jim impacted the lives of many in his 21 years, and his memory lives on in four children of two generations who were named after him. James Ian (Doug & Karen McLellan of Welcome, MN); Jamie (Doug & Anne Sheppard of Sherburn, MN); Jim's niece, Jamie (Dick & Sandy Schultz of Sioux Falls, SD); and Jim's great-niece, Jayda (Jamie & Nate DeJong of Lincoln, NE). Jim's great-niece Jayda DeJong presented trophies at the Fairmont Speedway on May 27th, 2006 given in memory of Jim. Jim's nephew Eric Schulz continues family tradition racing in his first season during the 2006 racing season in South Dakota in the Heartland Racing Association's non-wing sprint car division.
