Maj. Daniel Clark Brittigan, 54, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and member of the VMI faculty for 31 years, died Friday, May 20, only five days after the end of the school year and on the eve of the opening of the summer session in which he had been scheduled to teach. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
A native of Ohio and a 1955 graduate of VMI, Maj. Brittigan held a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University and had also pursued graduate study at Oklahoma State University. He was a professional engineer and had served as chairman of the advisory board of Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, where burial was held.

Active in community and church activities, Maj. Brittigan was involved in numerous youth programs at the Lexington Presbyterian Church, as well as with the Little League and Boy Scouts. For more than ten years, he and his wife Betsy were directors and group parents of the Rockbridge Area Presbyterian Home in Lexington, receiving in 1981 the Service to Children Award presented by the Virginia Association of Children’s Homes. During their ten years as volunteers with the Home, more than 100 children between the ages of 6 and 18 were cared for, some staying for 3 to 9 years.

Maj. Brittigan is survived by his wife and four children.
