Alvin D. "Jake" Holthus age 75 of Winner, SD and formerly of Hamill, SD passed away, Thursday, April 20, 2006 at his home.

Alvin D. "Jake" Holthus was born February 7, 1931 to Henry and Dorothy (Schmidt) Holthus in Hamill, SD. He lived in Hamill until 2003 when he moved to Winner. He started working for his dad on the farm at age 16 and took over the farming operation when he returned from Korea in 1955. He sold the farm to his son Dennis in 1988.

He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hamill where he has been a lifetime member.

During his life he has served on the Zion Lutheran Church board, the Roseland Township board, Hamill School board, Tripp County Water board and the State Water board. He has been a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 146 in Colome, VFW in Winner and Disabled American Veterans.

Jake served in the Untied State Army and served one tour in Korea from 1953 to 1955. After returning from Korea, he started working as a substitute mail carrier in the Hamill area. The last 6 years of his 30 year career was spent hauling mail in Winner for the Witten and Carter area. He was a dedicated mail carrier and loved his job.

He married Bernice Pharris on June 3, 1955. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Winner, SD, three children; Crystal Needham (Dusty) of Union, KY; Dennis Holthus of Hamill, SD and DeEtta (Wayne) Mathisen of Keenesburg, CO; three grandchildren, Christopher, Joey and Cheyenne, four step grandchildren, Jack, Rhonda, Allen, and Mindy, five ste-greatgrandchildren; one brother Leon Holthus of Custer, SD; one sister, Viola (Byron) Eldridge of Colome, SD, special lifelong family friend Roger Fiala of Carter, SD and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Donald and Leonard and one step grandson, Nicholas Needham.

Burial in the Hamill Cemetery.
