Mrs. Newton was born March 13, 1930, in the Suttons community of Williamsburg County, SC. She was a daughter of the late William Emmett Altman and the late Leslie Fair Gist Altman.
She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1948. She was a member of Pineview Baptist Church.
She was survived by her husband of 64 years, Clarence Lezair "Son" Newton, Jr., two daughters, Jennifer N. Gatling (Mike) of Ridgland, MS, and Cynthia "Cindy" N. Parnell (Polie) of Cornelius, NC; three grandchildren, Michael C. Gatling (Nicki) of Madison, MS; Courtney P. Whittaker (Andy) of Cornelius, NC; and Justin E. Parnell (Susan) of Sparta, NJ; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie A. Campbell of Blythewood, SC, and Roberta A. Thompson of Laurel Hill, NC; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was predeceased by a son, Clarence Lezair Newton, III; five brothers, Emmett Eston Altman, Nicolas Hagwood Altman, Henry Lonnie Altman, James Theron Altman, and David Eugene Altman; and six sisters, Ellen A. Hunter, Nettie A. Ellis, Mary E. Altman, Sarah A. Marshall, Lillian A. Crosby, and Leslie Fair Altman.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015, in Pineview Baptist Church. The Rev. Mitch Thrower and Dr. James Best officiated. Burial, directed by O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home, followed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Thomasville, AL.
