Ernie was one of a kind. If you needed something fixed, he could either fix it for you, help you fix it, or tell you who to call to get it fixed. He was a man of strong values and strong opinions and he wasn't shy about sharing them. A humble man, we never knew that he had received the Bronze Star until we read his obituary. He was the best neighbor we've ever lived next door to and we were so sad when he passed away.

Ernest Cartmill, 73, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, March 22nd, 2015. He was born January 31st, 1942, in Montgomery County, Kentucky, the son of Fred and Mary Frances Cartmill. Ernie served in the Army from 1960 to 1972, including two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal, 3 Bronze Stars (2 for valor), and a total of 44 medals and awards during his time in the Army. He was field commissioned in Vietnam from Enlisted to Officer as a 2nd Lieutenant. Ernie ended his service after 12 years at the rank of Captain.

Ernie is survived by his children, Jennifer Woodward (James), of Lee's Summit, Adaire Perkins (Casey), of Topeka, and Sam Cartmill (Whitney), of Topeka; three grandchildren, Brandon & JJ Fleming and Josey Perkins; and three siblings, Mary Rogers (Shirley), Anna Cartmill, and Patsy Chaffins, all of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Rodney Cartmill and Frieda Templin. Ernie retired in 2005 from the State of Kansas. He was a member of the V.V.A., the V.F.W. and N.R.A.

Ernie was cremated. A graveside celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 28th at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, 1-70 and Auburn Road in Topeka.
