Walter Dick Leonard was baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, in South Bank, North Yorkshire, England on June 5, 1882. He came to the United States at age five with his family in 1887 arriving at Castle Garden in Manhattan which was New York's immigration station before Ellis Island began operations. Walter grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. His occupation was draftsman. At one time he worked for the Electric Boat Company.
