Inventor. He was a scottish engineer and he invented steam navigation, he was the builder of the first practical steamboat, the 'Charlotte Dundas'. He was born in Leadhills, Scotland. He was the son of a mechanic in the mines in the surrounding area. His parent's were not wealthy but he was well educated. They intended on having him enter into the ministry, but his own ambitions lay with engineering. In 1785 he joined up with his older brother George in trying to build a steam engine at Wanlockhead to the design of James Watt. A very large *cenotaph is erected just outside the walls of the leadhills graveyard in memory of William. It was erected by public subscription in 1891 which was 60 years after he passed away. He is actually buried in the St Botolph without Aldgate Churchyard in Aldgate, City of London, Greater London, England. And there is a tablet that was placed there by the right hon sir Marcus Samuel lord mayor in 1903.
