Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, at Crestwood Cemetery for Mr. William B. "Bill" Simmons, age 82, of Gadsden, who passed away Sunday, June 19, 2011. Rev. John Simmons and Rev. Glenn Mize officiating. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service directing.
Mr. Simmons was born on October 29, 1928 to Selmon Evans Simmons and Annie Mae Barnard Simmons. He graduated from Gaston High School and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber and United States Postal Service. Mr. Simmons was a life-long active member of Union Hill United Methodist Church, where he served in many positions ranging from Sunday School Superintendent to trustee. He was an active member of the Methodist Men's Club. He served in a number of positions, including the credit committee for Family Savings Federal Credit Union in Gadsden and was among the founders and sustaining members of the Tidmore Bend Volunteer Fire Department. He was a strong supporter of the Gaston High School Bulldog athletic program as well as a loyal fan of University of Alabama football. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Doris Jean Hale Simmons; brother, Rev. Thomas Simmons; sister, Doris Simmons Wade; daughter-in-law, Rev. Elise Moss-Simmons and special grand nephew, Phillip Wesley Thomas.
