Elsie Elaine Carlson, the daughter of Oscar and Mathilda (Peterson) Carlson, was born May 17, 1924 in Monterey, Minnesota. She attended grade school in District #102 in Galena Township, Martin County and later was a 1942 graduate of Trimont High School. After graduation she attended Mankato Commercial College. Elsie then was employed as a bookkeeper at Salets Department Store in Mankato. At Lake Karonis Bible Camp she heard a missionary speak, after that she felt the Lord calling her to Africa. In preparation for this she attended North Park College and Bible Institute in Chicago. She earned her degree in nursing, R.N., from the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1952 she was commissioned for service in Belgian Congo (later called Zaire) at the annual conference in Turlock, California. In September of 1952, she went to Belgium to study French language and a tropical disease course for a year. Upon arriving in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) she took further studies in order to be recognized by the govt for medical work on our mission field. She traveled up the Congo River on a river boat to Lisala and then by car driven by Dr. Titus Johnson to Karawa. She believed the Lord led her step by step in preparation as accountant and nurse. On the mission field she was involved in different aspects of the medical work. This included working with the leprosy and tuberculosis patients. Also working in the operating room and in her last year teaching primary health workers so they could help their people in the villages to have better health.
