William A. Powell, 84, peacefully passed on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Wingate Healthcare at East Longmeadow surrounded by family. Son of the late Sidney and Clara (Ferguson) Powell, he was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on Aug. 3, 1930. He lived the early years of his life in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and attended schools there. He also earned bachelor’s degrees from Kansas State University and then Western New England College. He served with distinction as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. For much of his career, he worked as a senior auditor for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. He was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Church in East Longmeadow. He was a talented woodworker, and in his spare time he also enjoyed hunting, playing golf and traveling. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Anita J. Powell of East Longmeadow. He is survived by a daughter, Judith P. Kelliher, and her husband, Christopher “Moose” J. Kelliher, and their daughter, Victoria Kelliher, of East Longmeadow. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Lois Powell, and a brother, James Powell. He also leaves many of Anita’s family members as well as several dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral Mass for William on Friday morning at 10:00AM at St. Michael’s Church, East Longmeadow. A committal service will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. A special thanks to the staff at Wingate Healthcare at East Longmeadow for the compassionate care given to William. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of one’s choice or to St. Michael’s Church of East Longmeadow. Tazzini Funeral and Cremation was entrusted with the Services.
