He and his first wife Bettye Miller, (born Bettye Wilson, daughter of Bernis & Maud)performed for many years at the Horseshoe Lounge on Troost in Kansas City. Bettye died in 1977, and he is survived by his second wife, Linda whom he married in 1980. Milt & Bettye toured nationally and played at the Newport Jazz Festival in the 1960's. In May 2005 He was one of seven local musicians awarded Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Awards during a concert to benefit Coda Jazz Fund, which raises money to help provide proper funerals and burial for needy Jazz Musicians. A traditional Wake and Jam session in his honor was held Feb 9 2006. Funeral St Andrew's Episcopal Church. Cremation

"Milt Abel & Bettye Miller a husband and wife musical duo, reigned over the Kansas City Jazz scene from the 1950's through the 1970's. Abel & Miller first met in 1953 at the Horseshoe Lounge at 32nd & Troost KC MO. Where they continued to perform regularly for 10 years. They went on to entertain audiences at other venues locally and nationally. After Miller's death in 1977, Abel continued to perform for nearly 30 years, sometimes accompanied by his son from his second marriage, Milton Jr, or Miller's daughter from her first marriage, Bettyejo Miller(d/o Joel Miller & Bettye Wilson)"
