Samuel Shanks Carpenter was the son of William Dinwiddie Carpenter 1847 – 1938 and Emma Shanks 1855 – 1943. His known siblings were: Dr Eugene R. Carpenter 1873 – 1934; Lena "Chip" Carpenter 1875 – 1881; Grace Carpenter 1883 – 1966; Maud Carpenter 1885; Dee Carpenter 1887; Cecil M Carpenter 1891 – 1935.

Judging from the birth of the first known child Shanks married Juliet Ann Blanchard about 1912.



to a pioneering family, parents Samuel Shanks Carpenter and Juliet Blanchard Carpenter. Shanks was a rancher, miner, and had several bakeries until the Great Depression; in the early 1930s he served as county commissioner. Juliet was postmistress of Ysleta for a number of years.
