GRIMESLAND -- Mrs. Dorothy "Mae" Stocks Briley, 84, died Thursday, March 31, 2005.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. H.C. Potter and the Rev. Tim Pittman. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
A native and lifelong resident of Pitt County, Mrs. Briley attended the Pitt County schools. In her early married years, she farmed with her husband. In 1969, she began working for Hamilton Beach in Washington, retiring after 13 years of service in 1982. She was an active member of Grimesland Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she also served in the women's ministries.
A family-devoted person by nature, Mrs. Briley took great joy in serving her family. Many meals were served at her table, as she was an excellent cook. Spending time with her family was her focus. She greatly enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition, working in her garden was one of her many passions.
Mrs. Briley was preceded in death by her parents, William Amos and Nona Mae Stocks; her husband of 54 years, Jimmy Hyman Briley; her first husband, James Lester Haddock; sisters, Leona Mills, Gladys Dixon and Blanche Hardee; and brothers, Bill Stocks, Leroy Stocks and Wilbur Lee Stocks.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandra H. White of Grimesland, Renae B. Williams and husband, John, of Greenville and Debbie B. Lell and husband, Roger, of Durham; three sons, Jimmy C. Haddock and wife, Sue, of Grimesland, Phillip Haddock of Simpson and Don Briley of Grimesland; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice Cooper of Beltsville, Md., Joyce Young of Homosassa, Fla., Etheleen Mills of Greenville and Magaleen Stocks of Norfolk, Va.; and a brother, Mac Stocks of Greenville.
