Melvin Richard Bartholomew, 68, of Raleigh died Monday, Feb. 9, 2015.

He was born April 22, 1946, in Raleigh. He was the oldest son of Melvin W. and Sarah Johnson Bartholomew.

He graduated in 1968 from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Administration. Richard was a manager trainee for Winn Dixie stores in Raleigh and later promoted to a store supervisor. His career in the grocery industry continued as operator of Bart's IGA in Wendell.

Richard was employed with Chris Leith Auto Dealership for 20 years in Wake Forest. He began his career as a salesman and later became general sales manager. He loved and had a passion for classic and new cars and also a fan of sports car racing.

Richard followed UNC Chapel Hill sports and past member of the Rams Club.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Whitley Bartholomew and his first wife Sue Avery Bartholomew.

He is survived by his wife Sandy and his mother Sarah of Raleigh. His daughter is Brooks and her husband Brad Emory and two granddaughters of Apex. Brothers Timothy Wayne and his wife Kaye Bartholomew of Raleigh and Larry Collins Bartholomew and wife Mary of Surf City. He also has seven nieces and nephews.

Richard was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. Visitation with family members will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m.
