Leslie Merrill and his son "Buddy" Merrill were the very "FIRST" 'Country and Western' act on the radio, they made television history when they appeared live on the local television station KDYL in Salt Lake City. At that time, Buddy was already playing steel guitar in his father's band - The Fremont River Rangers. They played in Utah in the early 1950's.

LESLIE MERRILL BEHUNIN, 88, died Sunday at Ramona Manor Nursing Center in Hemet. Born in Utah, Mr. Behunin lived in Hemet 27 years. He was an entertainer and restaurateur. His band, the Rhythm Aces, performed for many years in Stanton and Long Beach and he owned a restaurant in Stanton from 1969 until 1979.
Mr. Behunin was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Hemet.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita; two sons, Leslie Jr. of Wildomar and Maughn of Texas; two daughters, Judy Williams and Gloria Williams, both of Hemet; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mel of San Bernardino; and a sister, Ruby Santell of Utah.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McWane Family Funeral Home in Hemet. Friends may call at the mortuary from 1 until 4 p.m. today. Burial will be in San Jacinto Valley Cemetery.
