Nicasia Acevedo, nee Mercado, 103 years old, passed away peacefully on July 3rd, 2014 surrounded by the embrace of her loved ones. Her life was characterized by dignified strength, unshakeable faith, purity of heart, and sterling vision of her responsibility as matriarchal core of the family that venerated her, a family which has been forever molded by her example. She was the center of their universe, described by a great granddaughter as a "new angel" in heaven. Born in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico in 1911, Nicasia traveled to the USA in 1947 on a military plane with 5 of her children to join her husband. Without speaking the language, she raised her children, worked a full time job, kept a warm home, and saw her family grow and prosper. Her greatest joy was to have her family around her, as they were at the moment of her passing. For the past 40 years, she lived with her daughter Teresa Miller and son-in-law Richard Miller in Rockland County. Nicasia was predeceased by her husband, Nemesio in 1989, her daughter Maria in 1995 and her son Luis in 2008, but is survived by her loving children Nemesio Acevedo Jr., Teresa Miller, Carmen Acevedo, and Angelina Acevedo, her nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be Monday and Tuesday, July 7th and 8th, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Anthony's Shrine Church in Nanuet, followed by interment at St. Anthony's Cemetery. Joseph W.
