Joe Montgomery was the 10th child of Alexander Montgomery and Cathryn Rebecca Perry. Born in Pontotoc,Mississippi. His mother, Rebecca, died in child birth, and he spent a lot of his younger days with his brother Logan Montgomery. He played the french harp and did a lot of jug dancing withe his brothers. As a young man, he moved around in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma and met and eloped with Leota Goad September 09, 1904 at Folsom, Indian Territory Oklahoma
