Hummel was a former president of the American Oriental Society and the Association of Asian Studies.
A native of Warrenton, Mo., Hummel received three degrees from the University of Chicago and a doctorate from the University of Leyden in the Netherlands. He worked for the Library of Congress for 27 years.
He leaves two sons, Arthur, Jr., who is the U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, and Sharman B., of Milwaukee, and 10 grandchildren. His wife, the former Ruth Bookwalter, died in 1967.
