Mrs. Carol Ames, 39, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Hummel, 2406 Nineteenth street N.W., died yesterday of cancer in Phelps Memorial Hospital, Tarrytown, N.Y.
Her father was for many years chief of the division of Orientalia in the Library of Congress.
Mrs. Ames was born in Fengchow, Shansia, (sic) China, and received her early education in the Peking American School. She attended Western High School, the George School in Newtown, Pa., the University of California and Radcliffe College. Mrs. Ames also was a specialist in Chinese studies and history.
In recent years she lived in Hastings-on-Hudson, where she was active in church and community affairs and in religious writing.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a son, a daughter, and two brothers, Arthur W. Hummel, jr., deputy director of the United States Information Service in Japan, and Sharman B. Hummel of San Francisco.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow in South Presbyterian Church, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., with private burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery here.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be sent to the Memorial Fund Committee of South Presbyterian Church, Dobbs Ferry.
