He was one of sixteen airmen killed during a training flight when his bomber, B-17F Flying Fortress #42-6177, collided mid-air with B-17 #42-5325 in the skies near the air base and crashed.
The pilot and three other crew members parachuted to ground and survived. All ten aboard the other ship were killed.
