On Monday, May 1, 2006,
MILDRED LUCILLE "MEMAW" YATES, 84, of Duncan, went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in New Hope Baptist Church West with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Purcell, under direction of Carter-Smart Funeral Home.
Mildred was the first child born to Silas Lee and Audie Ethel Harper in Byars, Okla. on Jan. 19, 1922. She married the love of her life, Virgle L. Yates Sr., on June 9, 1946, and they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past year.
During World War II, Mildred worked in the aircraft industry as a "Rosie the Riveter" for Douglas Aircraft. Later in life, she was a daycare worker for 17 years, at First Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and Tanglewood Bible Fellowship.
She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church West and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Mildred attended every service that she was able to and always enjoyed the fellowship and teaching of Sunday school. She was also an avid reader of the Bible.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Virgle Yates Sr. of the home; her daughter, Betty Barnard and husband James of Bray; her three sons, Virgle Yates Jr. and wife Mary of Ardmore, Lester Yates and wife Patti of Duncan, and Jim Yates and wife Deanna of Honolulu, Hawaii; and her brother, Bob Harper and wife Janet of Stillwater.
Mildred was "MeMaw" to 13 grandchildren; Marshell Wright, Melissa Padillia, Marquita Snyder, Billy Yates, Randy Yates, Jennifer McBride, Leslie Weber, Joshua Yates, Allison Yates, Mallory Yates, Kevin Walser, Keith Walser and Joedi Walser. She also had 21 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mildred was preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers and their wives, her beloved daughter, Patricia Walser, and her first granddaughter, Renee Oates.
Pallbearers will be Billy Yates, Randy Yates, Joshua Yates, Brandon McBride, Roger Harper and Steven Harper.
