He was born on Dec. 21, 1938, to David and Alice Covey of Peoria, Ill. He attended Bradley University, where he studied civil engineering.
John worked as a civil engineer for the Marshall County and Peoria County highway departments, where he managed road and bridge construction projects.
John was a member of Temple Masonic Lodge 46, AF&AM, for 50 years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon.
John enjoyed being outdoors, driving, traveling, completing crossword puzzles and word games, listening to jazz music and spending time with his family and friends.
John is survived by his wife, Kay (Wilson) Covey of Peoria; son, Chris (Lori) Covey of Peoria; and two granddaughters, Madison and Shelby Covey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Scott Covey and David Covey; and his sister, Virginia Boswell.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at United Presbyterian Church of Peoria at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015. The Rev. Dr. Stephen McKinney-Whitaker and Pastor Patricia Stetson-Warning will officiate. Interment will be in the Memorial Garden at United Presbyterian Church.
Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church or the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
