Don was a retired building contractor and had a true passion for all animals, especially birds. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who had a heart of gold.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Lee R. Smawley. Surviving is his wife, Cathy Smawley. One son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Lindsay Smawley, Rocky Mount. One step daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Kevin Craighead, Vinton. Two grandchildren, Peyton and Ethan Smawley and two step grandchildren, Trey and Shane Gibson. His mother, Cordie Smawley, Kingsport, Tennessee. Three sisters, Betty Smawley, New York; Pearl Herron and husband Tim, Kingsport, Tennessee; and Veneta Borum and husband James, Maryland. One brother, Tom Smawley and wife Ethel, Kingsport, Tennessee. Two special mothers-in-law, Harriette Shartzer and Lillian Palmer. One sister-in-law, Robin Maxey and husband Johnny, Roanoke. One brother-in-law, Rev. Scott Shartzer and wife Jennifer, Dublin, VA. Several special nieces and nephews. Three special bird buddies, Daniel, Chuck, and Dale. And many friends including his neighbors, Bill and Penny Wilson and William and Janet Bowles.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Tuttle and the Rev. Scott Shartzer officiating. Burial will follow in Fair View Cemetery.
