So…when I was little we had one of those coo-coo clocks hanging in the front room. Tic toc as the pendulum swung back and forth. My mom always seemed to have a clock hanging in the guest bedroom, a clock sitting on the counter at the cabin, and even the clock in the camp meeting tent. Tic toc. I remember even taking the clock off the wall once and hiding it in a drawer. Tic toc. I could hear my own watch when my wrist was by my ear as I tried to sleep. It just drove me crazy. I would have to take my watch off and put it on my nightstand. Tic toc. After my son moved out, I fixed the room up so mom would have her own place to stay when she slept over. She hung one of those annoying clocks on the wall. Tic toc. I realized the other day when I was in the yard working that I didn't know what time it was and would have to go inside to check. I remembered that I had an extra clock that I had tossed aside in the shed. I asked my husband to hang it, with its new battery, above the slider that leads into the house. It would be protected from the weather but I could see it from almost anywhere I was in the yard. That next afternoon, I stepped outside on the stoop with the dogs and could hear tic toc! That incessant noise!!! I thought, as i rolled my eyes up, “very funny, Mom!” Then tonight, after midnight, I was on the other side of the patio in the adirondack chair-no birds, no neighbors, no barking, no airplanes, tic toc. “Really, Mom?!” as I sarcatically talked to her again. And then it hit me…it’s my mom’s heart beating:) That perpetual din had turned into a gift. Now I can’t wait for the silence, and just listen for the blessing. Tic toc, tic toc, tic toc.
