Irene E. Hummel, 88, formerly of 410 East St., Bloomsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where she had been a patient since Aug. 16. A former resident of East Street for 53 years, she had lived with her daughter in Catawissa for four years.
Born July 28, 1914, in Mifflinville, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Cora Dietz Spaid, and was educated in Mifflinville schools.
Mrs. Hummel was a 50-year member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, where she was a member of the Pals Sunday school class.
She had assisted her late husband, Clinton C. Hummel, who died May 15, 1977, in the operation of several Bloomsburg business.
Mrs. Hummel enjoyed raising flowers and doing yard work.
In addition to her husband, six siblings died previously; Donald Spaid, Wilbur Spaid, Agnes Stout, Hazel Getz, Mildred Crawford and Margaret Spaid.
She is survived by three children: Mrs. John (Pauline) Krum and Cleveland C. Hummel, both of Bloomsburg; and Mrs. C. Richard (Gloria) Gearhart, Catawissa; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters: her twin, Iva Hosler, Lancaster; twins, Leila Barnes and Leatha Eyer, both of Mifflinville; and Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Smith, Seaford, Del.; and a brother, Charles Spaid, Kenmore, N.Y.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, Third and Market streets, Bloomsburg, with her pastor, the Rev. Thomas A. Young, officiating. Burial will be in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy, under the direction of the Allen Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Bloomsburg.
