Rick was born February 19, 1947 in Oakland, California, son of the late Edward Nordell and Kay Sledge Nordell. He graduated from Culver High School, Culver City, California, and then Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, California with a degree in engineering and drafting. He served in the United States Navy, and then worked as an engineer at the Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake, California.
After a family vacation to Missouri, he loved the area so much that he moved his family to Carthage in 1974. He was a truck driver for many years working for several outfits in the area including Leggett & Platt, and Steadley. He also worked at the Wilson's Creek National Battle Field in Republic, Missouri as a grounds keeper. Rick retired from Bailey's Quarry in Reeds in 2010.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Lewis Nordell, whom he married August 10, 1968 in California; a son, Richard "Rich" Nordell and wife Sandy; a daughter, Deena Smith and husband Brian; grandchildren, Devon Nordell, Dylan Smith, Ally Nordell, Tiffany DeVillers, Dustin Smith, and Colton Smith; great-grandson, Cannon Smith; brother, Gary Nordell; sister, Melissa Nordell, and a brother-in-law, Jerry Lewis.
