VERONA – Betty Lawson Cleveland Van Buren, 82, of Verona, Virginia, (formerly of Craigsville), passed away Monday, August 4, 2014, at Avante at Waynesboro.

She was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Staunton, Virginia, the daughter of the late Clarence Alfred Cleveland, Sr. and Mildred Lawson Messick Cleveland.

Betty graduated from James Madison University and was an elementary teacher for the Augusta County School System for 31 years. She also was a volunteer with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank for 15 years and was an avid family historian.

She always referred to herself as "Augusta County's oldest teenager."

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Williams; a granddaughter, Kristy Liptrap; and a brother Col. John H. Cleveland.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at the chapel of Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, with the Rev. Galen Combs officiating. Interment will follow at Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton.

Active pallbearers will be Greg Roberson, B.J. Van Buren, Shane Williams, Cody Rankin, Jason Tyree, T.J. Crismond and Mitch Sorrells.
