Son of John and Maria Bass "Polly" (Perkinson) Bland, he married Rebecca Bolling Strachan in Petersburg, marriage bond dated 11 May 1847.

Although others have assumed he was laid to rest at Grub Hill Cemetery in Amelia County, Blandford Cemetery records clearly record his burial here on 4 Nov 1877 in a Strachan family plot. (Information from cemetery and marriage records)
