Son of Walenty and Rozalia Kotfica Koltys. He left Poland before the onset of WWI and immigrated to America on 31 Dec. 1911 on the steamship "Hanover" Leaving behind wife Anna Syp Koltys and daughter Blanche to secure a living in Phila. Pa.

Anna came the following year, and adding to their family Helena, Boleslaw (died in infancy) and Chester Joseph.
Anna would die in 1919, leaving Joseph to raise 3 children alone. His brother, and sister-in-law John and Tillie had come to America as well, helped with the raising of the children until Joseph could pay off the medical debts.

He worked many labor jobs mostly in the leather factories. He started a small candy store out of his house but the competition was fierce. Many families then were doing the same thing. Most likely why for years we heard the funny family stories of how grandpa was a "bootlegger" and the many raid's the police conducted at the house on Cambria St., but they never could catch him!

In 1923 he married Marya (Maria or Mary) Paluch, and had 2 daughters, Stella (Kisiel) and Anna May (Kinslow).
