He was killed in action in World War II while leading his platoon in an attack on a fort in a large city. He was killed instantly.

He enlisted in the National Guard March 5, 1941. The National Guard was made a part of the regular army. infantry. Alfred received his commission November 2, 1944. He arrived overseas March 3, 1944.
