In 1954 Edgar was combining grain on the Ralph Cottrell place south of Burlington when he got his hand caught in the combine. He managed to get it out and drove to the highway where he met Guyn Maller, who took him to the hospital. His left hand was so badly mangled that it had to be amputated.
