Ernest S. Pajakowski, 80, of South Bend, IN, passed away after a short illness at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2006, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Ernest Pajakowski was born on January 11, 1926, in South Bend, to Stefan Pajakowski (1886-1958) and Helen (Kalamaja) Pajakowski (1894-1927). He graduated from St. Adalbert's Grammar School and South Bend Catholic High School. While at South Bend Catholic he was class president and was named honorable mention all-state in football.

On April 11, 1953, he married the former Loretta Mae Shaw in Gary, Indiana, who survived him.

He loved to work. He began his career in 1944 at the former Studebaker Corporation. In 1956 he began a long successful career in sales with Stanley Enterprises and Michiana Machine. "Ernie" was so dedicated that he drove over a million miles during his career as a steel fabricating salesman. After retiring he started his "second career" as a deliveryman for Expert Optical, where he worked until his death. He loved Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs. But most of all he was a family man.

As a husband, father and grandfather, he will be deeply missed. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Casimir Pajakowski, Leo Pajakowski and Roman Pajakowski; two brothers-in-law, Stanley Krol and Roy Varda; and two sisters-in-law, Henrietta and Helen Pajakowski.

Along with his wife of 53 years he was survived by two sons, Stephen Ernest (Mary) of South Bend and Philip Eugene (Susanne) of Manchester, NH; two sisters, Virginia Krol and Theresa [Teresa] Varda.

His four grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. They are: Adam Leo, Stephanie Jude, Thaddeus Jude and Sophia Rossbach Pajakowski. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
