Craig Marshall Horsman, Sr. died Noveber 26, 2014 after a brave battle with cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Craig was born November 9, 1933 in Washington, D.C. to Mildred and Eugene Horsman. Craig was a graduate of Morristown Boys Boarding School in Morristown, N.J. He went on to UNC-Chapel Hill where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Three weeks after graduation, he married his wife of 57 years, Hilda Donaldson. They moved to Baltimore, MD where Craig served in the U. S. Army's Counter-Intelligence Corps. After his time in the service he worked six years at Stewart and Co. in Baltimore as their buyer of books and records. While in Baltimore, Laura and Marshall were born. He also earned his teaching certificate through Loyola University. The Horsman family moved to Mooresville where Craig taught world history in the Mooresville Graded School District for two years. He then returned to Chapel Hill where he received his masters of Education.

After Chapel Hill, the Horsmans moved to Monroe in 1970 where Ashley was born and where Craig served as the Associate Superintendent of the Monroe City Schools until his retirement in 1994. In that role, he wore numerous hats. He was especially proud of the excellent teachers he hired during his tenure. He also oversaw the construction of the current Benton Heights Elementary and Monroe Middle School. Craig was an educator through and through.

Craig lived a three-dimensioned life. He was a proud and dedicated husband and father. With Hilda, Craig created a lifetime of memories for his children on Memory Lane, appropriately enough. He was a loyal friend and generous neighbor. In former years, Craig and Hilda would have been busy in the kitchen this holiday season making batches of cranberry bread to share. He served on Monroe's community action board during pivotal years when schools were being integrated. He was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club. He also enjoyed volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Craig was an every-week face and deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

Craig, with help from Hilda and Ashley, built a log home on 13 acres off Griffith Road in 1987 where he enjoyed a flourishing retirement that included woodworking, gardening, cooking and canning, and tending to a gaggle of horses, sheep, chickens, guineas, cats and dogs. Always the learner, he was a voracious reader and avid collector of first edition books.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Hilda Donaldson Horsman; daughters Laura H. Hamby (Joe) of Charlotte, NC and Ashley H. Parks (Barry) of Walkertown, NC; son Craig Marshall Horsman, Jr. (Holly) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren Emily Horsman, Craig Marshall Horsman III, Sydney, Colby, and Wesley Parks; step-grandchildren Hannah Wofford (Dane) and Hunter Crawford; Sister Virginia H. Knouse of Lenoir, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law Larry and Celia Putnam of Mooresvile, NC, and Charles and Cissy Donaldson of Troutman, NC.

A memorial service celebrating Craig's life will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2014, 3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. Craig's family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28112.
