In 1973, several members of the Genealogical Society visited the Old Bates Cemetery and recorded a list of legible headstones, one of which noted Mary Ellen Bates' headstone read her name as "Ellen Bates", wife of Patrick Bates and that she had died in 1869.
The following excerpt from the 1887 History of Noble County; produced by L.H. Watkins & Co., states that she died in 1870:
In 1867 Patrick Bates married Mary E. Hughes, of this county, and by her had two children, both deceased. His wife died in 1870, and in 1881 he married Mary Morris.
