Loretta Jones

Loretta Bernetha Smalls Jones, 71 of Georgetown, SC, died on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Tidelands Community Hospice in Georgetown, South Carolina.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Bethel AME Church, Georgetown.

Mrs. Jones was born December 5, 1937 in Georgetown, SC, one of nine children of the marital union between Eddie Smalls, Sr. and Mrs. Frances Moultrie Smalls.

She graduated from Howard High School, Georgetown, SC, and earned the Bachelor of Arts degree from North Carolina A & T University, Greensboro, NC.

She pursued further studies at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC., Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC and the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC.

For thirty-two years Mrs. Jones taught english, reading and language arts in the School District of Georgetown County at Howard High, Choppee High and Georgetown High School.

Her motto was "A + D = S" (application plus determination equals success).

Over the years she was honored by many of her students with plaques, certificates, and various gifts including pieces of brick from the Berlin Wall.

Mrs. Jones was a member of Bethel AME Church where she served faithfully as a member of the Chancel and Senior choirs, the Women's Missionary Society, the ACE League and the Kitchen Angels.

Her primary community affiliation was that of a charter member and Golden Life Member of the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

She also assisted in chartering the Sigma Xi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Coastal Carolina University, Conway, SC.

She was also was a member of Georgetown County Education Association-Retired, the South Carolina Education Association Retired, and the National Education Association for the retired.

She is survived by her son, Bernard Jones Jr.; her daughters, Bernadette Jones-Wilson, Bernetha Jones-Paige and Lucretia Jones, all of Georgetown, SC; and two brothers, Eddie Smalls Jr. of Pawleys Island, SC and Joseph C. Smalls of Georgetown, SC.

Public viewing will be held 6 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Wilds Courtyard Chapel.

Funeral service arrangements are entrusted and directed by Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.
