John was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Youngstown, a son of the late John J. and Susan Mattie Slifka.
John worked in the carpentry shop at Youngstown Sheet & Tube for 35 years until he retired in 1980. He was a lifelong member of St. Cyril and Methodius Church, where he was active in the CY-ME Men’s Club and the Senior Citizens Organization.
John was a proud member of the U.S. Army, having landed in Normandy at the start of World War II, and served through the Battle of the Bulge.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Martin Slifka of Warren, Dolores (Jack) Sullivan of Liberty, and Susan (Ray) Pelyhes of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Anne, Bob, and Timothy; and six great-grandchildren, Noah, Zoe, Hanna, Lydia, Amelia, and Ezra.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Marchese Slifka, whom he married April 25, 1946, and who passed away Feb. 27, 1996, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary; a son, Michael Slifka; and siblings Betty Hubinsky, Agnes Ledinko, and Joseph Slifka.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered.
