Determined, gregarious, giving, prepared, faithful, responsible, protective and compassionate are words to describe Irene Fechter, who passed away on her 81st birthday early Wednesday morning, May 14, 2014. Irene was under the care of hospice and her only daughter, Diana, for a short six days prior to her death from multiple comorbidities.

Irene was born in Climax, Ky., in Rockcastle County at her family's home on May 14, 1933. She was the second child of eight and first daughter of Magdalene and David N. Bowman.

Irene worked as a grade school teacher in Ohio and California. She then worked at the State of California Employment Development Department for 14 years until retirement. Irene was a longtime volunteer at Kaiser Fairfield. She was a longtime member of Parkway Community Church, where she was treated like extended family with much love and kindness. Special thanks to John Barry and Dan Overby for their abilities to comfort and their faithful friendship.

Irene is survived by her present husband, John "Jack" Fechter; her only daughter, Diana Travelute; her only granddaughter, Jennifer Travelute; sisters, Flora Ballew, Cora Owens and Lavada Gatliff; brothers, Lonnie Bowman and Joseph Bowman; several brothers and sisters-in-law; step-daughter, Jackie Leffler; step-grandchildren, April and Jonathan Leffler; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Irene was preceded in death by her only son, Wayne Travelute in 1994; her first husband in 1974, Verlin Dean Travelute; brother, Herel Bowman; sister, Delia Mae Mobley; grandparents; several uncles, aunts, cousins and one nephew, David Ballew.

Special thanks to her husband's caregivers, Joni Pivarnik and Michael Clark, for their kindness and care to both Jack and Irene.

A visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Fairfield Funeral Home 1750 Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield. A committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
