Helen Lucille Gettle, age 94, a resident of Summit Place at Mt. Baker Care Center, Bellingham, went home to be with her Lord on February 21, 2000.

Helen was born in Madison, WI, the oldest of 3 children, to August and Rebecca (Helgeson) Gerfen, on April 1, 1905. She was a graduate of East High School in Madison.

She married Ted Gettle in 1925 and they had a son Richard and a daughter Marilyn. In 1948 they moved to Bellingham where they owned and operated the Ted's 99 restaurant for many years.

In earlier days Helen was an avid bowler, golfer, and fisherwoman. She loved gardening and raising flowers of all kinds. She specialized in raising pansies, roses and African violets. She also loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and was skilled in the lost art of tatting.

Up until her last few months she was tatting doilies for her friends and staff at Summit Place. She also was involved in making lap robes for nursing home patients and attended the senior crocheting club. Her hands were never idle.

She was happiest when her family was all together. She was a loving mother to look up to and respect, a loving grandma, and "Great Granny." She poke her mind in wisdom and humor and was "always there" for her family in all situations. She attended Calvary Temple Church where she was active in women's ministries, making quilts and sewing bandages for missionary families.

The past 4 years she attended Alger Valley Christian Center. Helen was a courageous woman as she journeyed through her illness for over 2 years. She is and will continue to be missed beyond words... but she is now at rest and has stepped over into Eternal Life.

She is survived by her son Dick Gettle and wife Joyce of Lynnwood; daughter Marilyn Rasmussen and husband Jerry of Bellingham. Five grandchildren; Dave Oiness and wife Karen of Deming; Debbie Fixel and Lynn Gettle both of Everett; Ron Gettle and wife Diana of Arlington; and Tracy Marcelli and husband Phil of Bellingham. 8 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. A sister-in-law, Orraine Gerfen and several nephews. She also had many younger women friends who called her "mom."

Her parents, her husband Ted of 63 years, sister Dorothy and brother Art, 2 sons-in-law, Marv Oiness and Don Apeland, precede her in death.

A Graveside service will be held at Greenacres Memorial Park Thursday, February 24, 2000 at 1 pm. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service and fellowship time will follow the burial in Greenacres Funeral Home Chapel at 1:30. Pastors Jim Cannon and Jerry Rasmussen will be officiating at the services.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Whatcom County or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Summit Place who gave such loving care to Helen and to the hospice staff and volunteers whose expertise was appreciated. A special thanks to Chaplain Ron Reddell, who ministered so faithfully and became a personal friend. Also thanks to the friends who visited her, sent cards, or brought flowers. God Bless You All!
