Born in York, on September 29, 1921, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Clara C. (Haines) Abel.
He was a 1938 graduate of William Penn Senior High School. A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII Gene served as a torpedo man in the Pacific Theatre. He was a tool and die maker and supervisor at Pennsylvania Tool and Manufacturing Company, Thompson Equipment and Machine Company, and Flinchbaugh Products, Inc.
Surviving are sons, Eugene K. Jr., husband of Jean (Williams) of Leola, Richard W., husband of Elizabeth "Ann" (Greene) of Johns Creek, Ga., Craig E. of Charleston, W.Va., and Brian R., husband of Linda (Sheffer) of Derwood, Md.; daughters, Doris E. King of York, and Barbara A., wife of Thomas (Simonton) of Mount Wolf; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; son, Ronald A. Abel; and grandson, Douglas R. Abel.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery with full military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
