C.W.C. was a photographer in his early years and got into the funeral business after his sister, Emma L. Woolwine, married John M. Oakey Sr. of Oakey's Funeral Home, Salem, Virginia. He, at one time, was a business partner with Mr. Oakey. C.W.C. was for many years an undertaker. In the 1870 Census, he is shown as living with John and Emma. At that time he was 20 years old. He was married twice, the first time to Emma Shepherd on September 23, 1880. Mary Emma Shepherd was born in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia, October 13, 1852 and died September 17, 1891 in Roanoke, Virginia.

Secondly, He married Emma W. Burke of New Market, Virginia in 1893.
